What is Boccia?
Boccia is a precision ball sport originally designed for athletes with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities affecting motor function. It has been a Paralympic sport since 1984 and is now played in over 75 countries worldwide.
Players throw, kick, or use a ramp to propel leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball (the jack). The sport can be played individually, in pairs, or in teams of three. Boccia is one of only two Paralympic sports that has no Olympic counterpart, making it uniquely its own.
Competition classifications include:
- BC1 — Athletes with cerebral palsy who are able to throw the ball, may use a foot to propel the ball. A sport assistant is allowed.
- BC2 — Athletes with cerebral palsy who are able to throw the ball with better arm function than BC1. No sport assistant.
- BC3 — Athletes with cerebral palsy or related conditions who are unable to throw or kick the ball and use a ramp (assistive device). A sport assistant is required.
- BC4 — Athletes with other physical disabilities (not cerebral palsy) affecting all four limbs. No sport assistant.
Many clubs also offer open and recreational play for athletes of all abilities, including those new to the sport.
